Best place to buy exchange usd to british pounds
Main Post:
Hi. I will be traveling with family to London in August. What is the best way to get British pounds to spend over there? Change them before I leave? Or a good place in London to get a decent exchange rate? I want to avoid credit card fees and I think their exchange rates are not very good. Are there any other tips or tricks related to this?
Top Comment: We ordered them from our bank and then just deposited them when we got back. We hardly used any.

Cheapest way to cash out to GBP
Main Post:
Hey all, I bought some BTC back in early 2017 and I'm only just revisiting it now. Back then the cheapest way of moving BTC into GBP was via GDAX on Coinbase and Revolut.
Just checking if there's now a simpler/ cheaper method for moving the money around. I see Coinbase now do GBP withdrawals but is this actually the cheapest option?

Coinbase Pro. Straight to GBP Current account. £1 withdrawal fee. Not terrible fees for trading.
Best way to cash RSUs in GBP from ETrade US
Main Post:
I work in the London office of a US company and I'm close to the vesting of the first part of my RSU grant they gave me when I joined.
I'm planning to sell some of the shares (held in a US ETrade account) and to convert them to GBP but I'm not sure what is the most efficient way of doing so.
My colleagues seem to either use Transferwise or Revolut. Is any of these two services better than the other? Is there any better third option?
Top Comment:
I've used the ETrade -> TransferWise route previously, and was very happy with the result - both the transparency, and the exchange rate!
From my rough notes:
Open a "borderless account" with TransferWise. This will provide you with the correct routing numbers, etc. which you will need to supply to E*Trade.
ETrade will charge you a fee to do a wire transfer - believe it's $25 per transaction.
TransferWise requires a specific name be supplied for your transfer. Unfortunately, E*Trade does not allow you to use a different name using their automated system. The workaround myself (and several colleagues) used was to add the routing numbers in to the system, and then give E*Trade a call to have them do it manually with the name required by TransferWise. This requires some authorisation from the call agent's supervisor, so prepare to be on-hold for about 30 minutes for this process.
Once the $USD is in your TransferWise account, the process becomes much smoother. TransferWise gives you an excellent breakdown of the rate and fees for your USD->GBP exchange. And after that, it's a simple transfer to your normal GBP/UK bank account.
Took about 2 days to get from ETrade to TransferWise, and then less than a few hours from TransferWise to my UK account.
Next round, I intend to try out Fineco Bank - Italian bank that offers USD/EUR/GBP accounts - they've recently opened up to accepting UK based customers.
I also have Revolut, but have only used it for very small transfers (GBP -> EUR) for holiday spending.
Whatever you do, do NOT just transfer direct from ETrade direct to your UK bank! Some colleagues of mine did this, and were quite upset when we compared final amounts!
Good luck. :-)
Pound cost average down Vs cash accumulation
Main Post:
I'd like to get some community view's on pound cost averaging down Vs accumulating cash at the moment.
I've been pound cost averaging down for over 3 years now, and find it a good strategy. However it has been suggested to me (not by a financial advisor but someone with more investing experience) that I should just leave the monthly contribution into my ISA in cash for the moment. The reasoning behind doing so is they are convinced this correction down will continue and I would be better deploying the cash at a later date.
I'm not so sure about changing strategy this early on in my investment journey (I plan to remain invested for at least another 10 years - if not until retirement). Any views and opinions in this advice?
Top Comment: Stay the course, timing the market is a terrible idea. Even if you are lucky this time, you'll develop a habit because you did it once, why can't you do it again? Then when the next crash comes you'll go cash gang and that time you might not be so lucky. Just keep doing what you're doing and ignore those who say timing the market is actually a good idea.
How much GBP cash should I bring with me when relocating to London?
Main Post:
I'm relocating to London soon and I already got a Wise card with accounts in $ and GBP.
How much GBP cash do you recommend that I bring with me? Is there a legal limit?

London is pretty contactless friendly. Should be good with about £80-100 pocket cash to start.
Where can I deposit thousands of pounds cash when I only have Monzo?
Main Post:
Should be a quick one: Just sold my car and have around £7,000 cash but no physical bank to deposit it into... Monzo have a deposit limit of £1000 every 6 months when you deposit in the Post Office.
Am I able to take cash to a bank or the post office and start a savings account or something? What's the best thing to do? Will I be suspicious of money laundering?
Top Comment: The easiest thing to do is probably to open an account at a high street bank. You can do it online right now, get your details, and go make a deposit at your convenience.
Cheapest way to cash out Crypto to GBP?

What is the cheapest way to cash out crypto to GBP/EUR?
I know you can use Coinbase but they charge 2% + fees so if you are cashing out 50k that's over a grand in fees just to withdraw.
Top Comment: If you want to use coinbase, switch to advanced and the fees are much lower. Even with no previous volume I believe the fees are 0.25% maker, 0.40% taker. You can use the GBP/BTC market or USDC/BTC market and convert USDC to GBP without any fees later. It’s pretty intuitive but I’m sure there are some good guides out there if you’re not used to the format
